Mandela´s speech effectiveness started from the beginning when he stated: “Today, all of us do, by our presence here, and by our celebrations in other parts of our country and the world, confer glory and hope to newborn liberty”. His speech was directed to both South African and international audiences, therefore he did not set his own goals or beliefs but the goals of many other countries that want to obtain peace. The fight for justice, equality, and freedom has affected the majority of the countries at some point in their history. When Mandela refers to “newborn liberty” he refers to the fact that South Africa is starting from this day, the first democratic nonracial government after a long period of darkness of apartheid, in which many had died and suffered race and class divisions. We will start living in a new nation, with democracy, free from sin as a newborn baby, with a brighter future and a renewed hope of equality for all. Mandela wants the international community to see South Africa as a new state that can move away from the past and look to the future as a newly united nation who should work together to overcome the past of which all the world will be proud. South Africans should know that from now on we will be traveling through a new road that will lead us to freedom and a more promising future and that there is not coming back to the past if we all go together in the same direction.
